Myth #4: Evan Gattis “is too old to be on this team.”

The ever popular “age myth” is also one I consider to be a double standard and very much FALSE!

Fans and critics seem to want to use it for players and against others. Unfortunately for Gattis, he always gets put on the wrong side of this standard.

He just turned 30 last August 18th, and arguably, had his best game of the season at the Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles. He went 2-for3 in that game, and 7-for-16 in that 4 game series.

But all some fans wanted, and continue to want, to look at is his age.

Gattis is only going into his 5th season in 2017. While a veteran, he is still a fairly young veteran at that. He will always have areas to work on, but there are not that many of them left.

And if age is really an issue, then why would Jeff Lunhow and Jim Crane go to all that trouble to get double digit year veterans in Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran, and Josh Reddick? Shouldn’t the age myth apply to those players as well?

The answer is no, because it really is just another number. If age really is that important, tell that to the likes of Beltran, Bortolo Colon, Ichiro Suzuki, or A.J. Pierzynski. All are 40 or older, and still active in the league today. Not only that, but they are playing their positions pretty well.

With Gattis only turning 30 this past summer, he still has plenty of years left and tread on his tires!
