Houston Texans: A.J. Bouye: The Best Corner In The League?

Well, Houston Texans’ fans, the debacle that was our game on Monday night against the Denver Broncos is over and we can finally move on. Although at least this time our team made an effort to stay in the game, the offensive production laid yet another bad egg.

And it stunk immensely!

I honestly don’t if it’s going to get better or will we continue to trend downward to a point where we can’t go any lower.

At this moment, the Houston Texans’ offense is ranked 29th, putting together a measly 319.6 yards per game.

In the past two seasons that Bill O’Brien has been at the helm, the Texans were in the middle of the pack which is not a ringing endorsement but a lot better than what we’re doing now.

A confused quarterback, receivers that can’t get open and a couple of talented running backs — one that can’t always find the holes and one that loves to fumble the ball — makes a recipe for disaster for this offense.

We have the right stuff to be exploding across the league on offense but it’s just somehow it hasn’t come all together.

We’re getting toward the halfway point of the season and my confidence is nearly at zilch in terms of things getting better.

Ugggggggh!

But let’s not talk so much about the doom and gloom, there are some bright spots to this team, you know.

And there’s a damn good one right now standing proud in our secondary.

Who am I talking about?

I’m talking about A.J. Bouye.

Yes, this undrafted free agent that we picked up off the street some three years ago is killing it ya’ll and it isn’t even a joke.

As much as I criticized his play in his early years, he has really come on strong despite doing so on a part-time basis.

He made has debut in 2013 which was, by far, the worst season in Texans’ history because of the expectations that were set forth after having a banner 2012 season that ended with a loud thud.

Yeah, we were 2-14 and we all needed a scapegoat and I railed on Bouye hard because we just so damn BAD.

But the numbers aren’t lying about his success this year.

According to Pro Football Focus, Bouye is the highest-graded cornerback this season with a grade of a 92.8, which is two points higher than any other CB in this league currently.

He is graded eight points higher than any other Texans’ CB as well.

Who are the closest graded cornerbacks behind him?

Aqib Talib (90.8), Chris Harris Jr. (89.0), David Amerson (88.4) and Brent Grimes (86.3).

Bouye being mentioned among those names speaks to the dedication that he has to his craft and that he has opportunity to get EVEN BETTER.

His grade for this past Monday was a whopping 96.6 and there’s no sign of him being able to slow down.

PFF also states that when quarterbacks throw in Bouye’s direction, they have a passer rating of 64.2, which is more than 20 points below the league average.

He’s covered Emmanuel Sanders this past Monday, he smothered T.Y. Hilton the previous week and has still not allowed a touchdown thus far.

This guy is good folks and I could make a strong case that he’d be this good even if he were starting full-time.

With so many dim areas while viewing the holes on this team, it’s great to know that we have a shining star that illuminates brighter than the human eye could comprehend.

He may not be here after this season because if he continues his pace some team with wads of cash will throw insane amounts of money at him and he’ll be gone.

So we better enjoy what we have and hope that the Texans have a plan if Bouye becomes hot to trot.

Until then, I’m going to sit back and watch a guy who people thought he wouldn’t amount to much as a corner prove all of the naysayers wrong.

Bouye, 25, has 21 tackles, eight passes defended and 1.0 sack through all seven games (three starts) this season.
