Former University of Houston Cougars defensive standout Simon Fletcher will be honored during halftime of Monday night’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Houston Texans with induction into the Broncos Ring of Fame.

Fletcher — out of football since his retirement in 1995 — ended a run of 140 consecutive starts, thrilling Houston Cougars fans for three seasons (1982-1984) before being drafted by the Denver Broncos with the 54th selection (2nd round) in the 1985 NFL draft. He never missed a game in his NFL career spanning a streak of 172 games.

For 11 seasons, the edge-rusher was one of the best in the National Football League. By the time his career has ended, the Denver defensive record book was filled with Fletcher’s namesake.

He still holds the franchise’s career marks for sacks (97.5) and he along with current Broncos defensive-end DeMarcus Ware are the only two players in NFL history to record a sack in 10 consecutive games.

For seven consecutive seasons (1988-1994), he led the Broncos in sacks and holds the franchise record with 20 multi-sack games.

A member of the Broncos 50th anniversary team, Fletcher was 13th on the NFL’s all-time sack list when he retired. A starter on three AFC Championship teams, he finished with 851 tackles, a pair of interceptions, 21 forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries.

The Bay City native was a member of three Super Bowl teams in Denver. Nowadays, Fletcher can be found just a few miles down the road (78 to be exact) in Fort Morgan, Co. where he operates his Grid-Iron Grill & BBQ serving up great stories and even better delectable delights.

Fletcher will be inducted with Denver kicking legend Jason Elam and safety John Lynch who in just four seasons in Denver became one of only five all-time Broncos named to four consecutive Pro Bowls.

Nonetheless, this news is a distinct honor for one of Houston’s own.

Could the next stop for Simon Fletcher be the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio?
