Texans: Benardrick McKinney: Week 5 Golden Bull Award Winner
Is it over yet? Is it safe to crawl out of my cave of obscurity of what we call Houston Texans football? Okay, I guess it is. I had to put myself in a bit of a timeout after witnessing one of the worst games I’ve seen in our beloved team’s short history.
Is it over yet? Is it safe to crawl out of my cave of obscurity of what we call Houston Texans football? Okay, I guess it is. I had to put myself in a bit of a timeout after witnessing one of the worst games I’ve seen in our beloved team’s short history.
As much as I like to celebrate successes, the fact that they were few and hard to come by makes watching this team the most frustrating.
I will always have Deep Steel Blue, Liberty White and Battle Red flow immensely through my veins but there are some instances where I wonder if we’re going to get things right on the football field.
I’m thoroughly convinced that as long as we’re taking on opponents in our division that we’ll be okay and we can compete just fine.
But take that element away and I cringe at how we may perform against some of the league’s top talent.
Although my expectations were that we were going to compete against the Minnesota Vikings, force turnovers and keep their scoring at a minimum, the whole damn thing backfired.

And we’re on the outside looking in, staring at a 31-13 loss.
The Vikings were in control the entire game and that’s no joke.
Notwithstanding the fact that the Texans were playing in one of the loudest facilities in the NFL so I’m sure it became quite difficult to convey the offensive game plan while on the field.
And yes, there actually was a plan but it certainly looked like that it wasn’t executed to a tee.
That has to change.
But enough my hot air about what we didn’t do, let’s talk about some of the things that we did.
There’s has been a guy on our defensive line that has quietly — but fiercely — become one of our most reliable members.
Because of this, excellence deserves to be recognized and on that type of basis continuously, we will honor an individual player that made the most impact in helping the team, despite whether it resulted in a win or a loss.
We’ve dubbed it House of Houston Golden Bull Award…
And this week’s Golden Bull Award goes to…
The second-round pick from 2015 that the Texans traded up to steal is paying extreme dividends on our D-Line!
I had a good feeling about this pick just from his work at Mississippi State and seemed to have a modest swag about himself as well.
But he’s truly getting the job done, wreaking havoc, disrupting activity and taking down his defensive assignments wherever he’s at.
Next: Texans: Does The Offense Have Signs Of Life?
In fact, he’s already outpacing his production from his rookie season.
Through five games, McKinney has 48 combined tackles — 22 solo — with 26 assisted along with 2.0 sacks and one forced fumble.
In 2015, he had 63 combined, 37 solo, 26 assisted and 1.0 sack.
Of course, we know J.J. Watt is not around to help so this allow the rest of our line to shine.
Guys like Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus are stepping up big-time but this week it’s time to recognize McKinney’s efforts.
Believe me, he’s one of our brightest stars at the moment with breakneck luminosity.
I hope he continues this rabid pace he has had so far as he’s making a name for himself in such a short amount of time.
We’ll have to see — until then, go Texans, let’s get ready for the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday night!
