The New And Improved Roster

After this wild deadline, the Astros added four players to the 25-man roster. Charlie Blackmon and Steve Pearce join the offense, while Chris Archer and Boone Logan are added to the staff.

The Astros did trade away five major leaguers in Carlos Gomez, Preston Tucker, Scott Feldman, Mike Fiers and Pat Neshek.

With the extra spot available, the Astros should call up James Hoyt, who has been dominating in AAA.

Here’s how the roster now looks after all the moves:

Hitters (12)

C – Jason Castro, Evan Gattis (2)
INF – Marwin Gonzalez, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Luis ValbuenaSteve Pearce (5)
OF – George Springer, Charlie Blackmon, Colby Rasmus, Jake Marisnick, Alex Bregman (5)

Pitchers (13)

SP – Dallas Keuchel, Chris Archer, Lance McCullers Jr., Doug Fister,  Collin McHugh (5)
RP – Chris Devenski, Michael Feliz, James Hoyt, Tony Sipp (LHP), Boone Logan (LHP), Ken Giles, Luke Gregerson, Will Harris (8)

Lineups

vs. RHP                                                     vs. LHP

Springer – RF                                           Springer – RF
Blackmon – CF                                         Blackmon – CF
Altuve – 2B                                               Altuve – 2B
Correa – SS                                                Correa – SS
Valbuena – 3B                                          Pearce – DH
Bregman – DH                                          Valbuena – 3B
MarGo – 1B                                               Bregman – LF
Rasmus – LF                                             Gattis – C
Castro – C                                                  MarGo – 1B

Bench                                                       Bench

Marisnick – CF                                         Marisnick – CF
Gattis – C                                                  Castro – C
Pearce – 1B/2B/OF                               Rasmus – LF

And by the way, those lineups are without Yulieski Gurriel. When he’s on the team, I think the Astros should send down Hoyt and go with 13 hitters and 12 relievers until rosters expand in September.

Here’s how my lineups would look with Gurriel in the lineup:

vs. RHP                                                       vs. LHP

Springer – RF                                             Springer – RF
Blackmon – CF                                          Blackmon – CF
Altuve – 2B                                                Altuve – 2B
Correa – SS                                                Correa – SS
Valbuena – 1B                                          Gurriel – 3B
Gurriel – 3B                                               Pearce – DH
Bregman – DH                                          Valbuena – 1B
Rasmus – LF                                             Bregman – LF
Castro – C                                                  Gattis – C
Bench                                                       Bench

MarGo – 1B/2B/SS/3B/OF                 MarGo – 1B/2B/SS/3B/OF
Marisnick – CF                                         Marisnick – CF
Gattis – C                                                  Castro – C
Pearce – 1B/2B/OF                               Rasmus – LF

Lord! Both lineups are absolutely stacked and the Astros and manager A.J. Hinch have so many options in terms of lineup construction. Have MarGo on the team and on the bench gives them such flexibility with the lineup and they’ll make sure to use the DH to give their stars plenty of days off over the last month of the season.

More from Houston Astros

Ok, so you’ve swallowed all the trades, seen the rotation, seen the bullpen and see the lineup. How good would this team be?!? How stacked is this team?!?

Making these moves would easily make the Astros AL favorites. Would they be World Series favorites? Well that would depend on the rest of the activity at the trade deadline, but me thinks they’d be the favorites with this squad.

The crazy thing is that all these trades alone aren’t crazy. All them together? Yea, no chance. But each one separately makes sense.

So now it’s time to text GM Jeff Luhnow. It’s true I don’t have his number, but I need him to read this and make the phone calls. We can make it happen!
