Rockets: Could Rudy Gay Help Our Scoring Woes?

The Rockets have secured James Harden for the next four years at 118 million, now they need to finish filling out the roster with talent. Can they orchestrate a trade that will give us a better chance to compete against the loaded western conference?

This offseason has been a roller coaster ride to say the least. The Rockets had hopes of signing one or two top tier free agents only to be denied a meeting by Kevin Durant and turned down by Al Horford. Despite this setback, Daryl Morey was able to snag Ryan Anderson, who he has coveted over the last few years.

Anderson is the prototype stretch four and has a skill set that will undoubtedly mesh well within Mike D’Antoni’s offensive scheme. His three-point shooting will be invaluable given James Harden’s uncanny ability to penetrate and dish.

The Rockets also landed Eric Gordon, who was a former teammate of Anderson’s down in New Orleans. Gordon is also a good shooter and will benefit from all the attention that is focused on stopping the beard.

The problem with the signings is that both have been injured often and missed large chunks of seasons. In my humble opinion, this slightly lessens the impact of the acquisitions and fuels the need to add more talent that fits the new run and gun offense.

The Rockets could stand to be more athletic on the wing as Shawn Marion was very effective during the D’Antoni era in Phoenix. He could knock down open shots as well as slash and create off the dribble.

Trevor Ariza is the current starting small forward and has played well for the organization over the last few years. However, he has not been as efficient from long-range or able to create as easy as he once could.

Sam Dekker is off to a good start in summer league and he may be able to add production to the position in the future. As of now, he is basically a rookie after missing most of last season. With this being said, the addition of a savvy veteran with a specific skill set could definitely enable the Rockets to complete at a higher level.

Personally, I feel that Rudy Gay would definitely meet the criteria and could serve as a mentor for the up and coming Sam Dekker. Fortunately for us, it has become common knowledge that Sacramento is actively trying to trade Gay for the right price. He averaged 17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season, which would greatly help alleviate the Rocket’s recent scoring woes.

What would we have to give up? Well, I imagine that a trade like this would assuredly end Trevor Ariza’s tenure in Houston and include at least one other player to secure the deal. More than likely, the Kings will want some youth in return, which may mean that Kj McDaniels or Montrezl Harrell may have to be part of the deal.

With everything considered, a deal such as this could make the Rockets a much better team for the 2016-17 season. We could have able scorers from the one to the four and Clint Capela to clean the boards at the five. What do you think about this trade proposal?
