Houston Texans 7 Round Mock Draft 2.0 – (Trades Included)
By Travis Oquin
2nd Round – Pick #52
Sterling Shepard – WR – Oklahoma
5’10” – 193
The one other position other than defensive end that the Texans must come away with in this draft is a wide receiver with speed, preferably one that can play the slot position and return punts. There may not be a better fit to that description that Oklahoma’s Sterling Shepard. With Corey Coleman already off the board in the 1st round at 22, the Texans chose to trade back and fill the defensive line need with best player available.
If the Texans do that, the 2nd round pick almost certainly will be a wide receiver and if the Texans sit at #52 they will be praying that Sterling Shepard makes it to them. In reality, they may not even wait and may choose to trade up a bit to ensure they get him.
Shepard is an extremely polished wide receiver, with perhaps the best hands in the draft, outstanding route running and 4.48 speed. He should fit perfectly with the Texans trio of the foreseeable future with DeAndre Hopkins as the clear number one receiver and last year’s 3rd round selection 6’3” Jaelen Strong.
There are not a lot of options at WR if Shepard is gone at 52. The only realistic options are Pittsburg’s Tyler Boyd who is not as fast as Shepard but has outstanding hands, and in this writer’s opinion you seldom go wrong taking the wide receivers with the best hands.
Braxton Miller, who is a dynamic athlete but may take some time to get more comfortable at the position, is the other option. However, with those three, it’s a reasonable risk to wait till pick 52 for the WR selection.
Others on the board to consider:
WR Tyler Boyd (Pittsburgh), WR Braxton Miller (Ohio St.)
