6th Round – Pick #195

Stephen Anderson – TE – California

6’2” – 230

It’s hard to say what exactly the Texans are looking for at tight end.  In reality Ryan Griffin is the only adequate tight end that they have.

C.J. Fiedorowicz has been extremely disappointing as he was supposed to be a good blocking tight end, problem is he’s not good at blocking, which is why that was a terrible draft pick taking him as high as they did in the 3rd round.  Next time Bill O’Brien or Rick Smith tell you they don’t draft based on need, just point to Fiedorowicz.  They over-drafted him because O’Brien wanted a blocking tight end.  Fiedorowicz also hasn’t developed yet as a pass catcher.

But if you look at the tight ends the Texans have looked hard at this offseason, it seems clear that they want a pass catching/move tight end.  One of our options in the 5th round was Devon Cajuste who is a WR/TE hybrid and extremely athletic.

But here we have them taking Stephen Anderson.  Anderson has excellent hands and is a tight end/H-back type that they can move around and do some damage in the passing game.  He has the exact same measurables as Jordan Reed from the Redskins who had a monster season this past season.  The Texans have worked out Anderson and if they don’t draft a tight end to replace Fiedorowicz, at least they can add a different type weapon to the mix.

Alternate options:

WR Jaydon Mickens (Washington), QB Jeff Driskel (Louisiana Tech), K Ka’imi Fairbairn (UCLA), WR Daniel Braverman (Western Michigan)
