3rd Round – Pick #85

Le’Raven Clark – OT – Texas Tech

6’6” – 316

After the two biggest needs are filled the Texans can go a number of directions.  A quality tight end would be nice.  A potential starting center could also be the choice if available.  But the Texans are also concerned about depth on the offensive line.

Duane Brown is coming off of surgery to repair a torn quad muscle and although his rehab seems to be going well, the estimate for a return from an injury of this nature is 8-to-12 months.  He has 8 months ideally to get healthy and be ready to go.  If not, look for Derek Newton who may be better at guard longer term, to slide to left tackle or swing tackle Chris Clark to fill in.

Either way, with Brown’s age and Newton’s drop off in play last season, the Texans would like to look to the future a bit.  If Le’Raven Clark is still on the board he will be hard to pass up.  While still somewhat raw, Clark has physical traits that offensive line coaches love, specifically very long arms, 36 1/8 inches to be exact.  Clark will likely not be ready to start as a rookie, but is an interesting developmental selection as he physically projects as a future left tackle.

Alternate options:

C Jack Allen (Michigan State), TE Nick Vannett (Ohio State), TE Austin Hooper (Stanford)
