2nd Round – Pick #52

Chris Jones – DE/DT – Mississippi State

6’6” – 310

In this mock draft we had the Texans taking WR in the first round.  If so, they should come back in the 2nd round and fill possibly the biggest need which is Jared Crick’s replacement at defensive end.  DE, at the moment, is the thinnest position on the team with Crick’s departure.  The only reserve defensive lineman that has played reasonably well in the past and is on the current roster, is last year’s 6th round draft pick Christian Covington.  The Texans desperately need some depth here and potentially a starter.

More from House of Houston

Those close to defensive coordinator Romeo Crennell and have played in the old Patriot’s defensive system believe that RAC prefers a bigger player that what Crick was at this position.  If Louisiana Tech’s Vernon Butler is still on the board, he’s the pick, but outside of a trade-up situation, I wouldn’t expect Butler to be on the board at pick #52.  The next most enticing player at this point is Mississippi State’s Chris Jones.

Jones is a massive man at 6’6”, 310 pounds is tremendous against the run, has the length that you like at the position and shows some promise in pressuring the QB.  At times, Jones makes plays like some of the best in the country on film.  If not for seeming to either take plays off or not go all out on every play, he’d be a first round pick.  However, playing on the same line with J.J. Watt, I don’t believe motor will be a problem.  With former teammate at Mississippi State Benardrick McKinney already here, Jones should be able to make a smooth transition.

Alternate options –

C Ryan Kelly (Alabama), WR Sterling Shepard (Oklahoma), WR Tyler Boyd (Pitt)
