Houston Astros: Random Thoughts As Position Players Report
By Yoni Pollak
The Houston Astros position players have reported to camp, meaning all players will be undergoing workouts starting tomorrow.
For my “random thoughts” post, which may be published a lot over the next month, I’ll be collecting tweets from various Astros writers and expounding on some of them. My thoughts will appear in italics under each tweet.
In no particular order…
I’m not ready to give up on Singleton yet and it appears he feels similarly. Singleton has the upper hand on the first base job due to experience, but if he comes out flat during the spring he’ll lose it. Once a former top prospect, this is Singleton’s do-or-die moment and it seems like he’s put in the offseason work to take advantage of this opportunity. Otherwise, Tyler White and eventually A.J. Reed will come marching through the door.
One of the few position battles this spring is at closer. Gregerson recently hurt himself so he may be a step behind. I still believe Ken Giles wins the job, but Gregerson certainly has a shot after looking good last season.
It was always confusing to me why the Astros never wanted Tucker to try to be at first base. Finally, with some uncertainty at first base and the Astros wanting to keep Tucker’s bat on the MLB roster, it appears as if they’re willing to give it a shot. If Tucker can make one start at first base every week or two, it would certainly help his case to stay on the roster.
This guy simply gets it. It sounds like it could be such a cliche line, but I honestly don’t remember ever hearing it. I absolutely love this kid and he’s going to be the face of this franchise for such a long time. Houston is lucky to have him!
There are so many more quotes and comments I’d like to make, but that’ll have to wait for a different time. Expect this type of post a few times a week over the next month as we wait for Opening Day!
