The Houston Rockets have free-fallen out of a playoff spot with three straight losses, including two to the Portland Trailblazers which allowed them to leap frog the Rockets.  Following the second loss in a week to the retooled Blazers, interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff was quoted as saying this Rockets team is “broken”.  Likewise, Jason Terry has made comments about the poor chemistry within the team, on the court.

With the February 18th trade deadline looming, reports have started to come out that the Rockets are actively shopping Dwight Howard.  Although Howard’s agent Dan Feigen denied that he or Howard has requested a trade now or at any point, the Rockets would be crazy to not shop him and see what the best package that is available to them.

What is the market for a 30-year old Dwight Howard and who would be interested?  It’s hard to say.  I wouldn’t expect the elite teams of the NBA interested with too many questions about Howard’s level of seriousness for it to be worth the chemistry risk for a team that already feels they have a shot at a championship in the next couple years.

  • What you can guarantee, however, that any of the non-high profile teams that often struggle to get elite NBA players to sign with them as free agents would have some interest.  And perhaps working the Rockets favor is that there are several teams that are also having far more disappointing seasons than they expected.

We are going to look at several teams that could be in a mood to make a deal to shake up things as much as the Rockets. Some teams that you won’t see on this list are the Dallas Mavericks as it’s extremely doubtful that Morey would even be willing to talk to them about Howard. You won’t see the Miami Heat either although the Heat expressed interest reportedly earlier in the year. The main reason being is because of Howard’s salary, Miami would have to include one of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Goran Dragic, none of which seems feasible.

So who should the Rockets be talking to?
