4. Andre Johnson’s Departure
Andre Johnson’s time in Houston was bound to end eventually, but many didn’t expect it to happen in the first half of the decade.
The future Hall of Fame receiver caught 85 balls for 936 yards during the 2014 season, but was visibly frustrated. He played with four different quarterbacks and missed the playoffs for the 10th time in his 12-year Texans career.
Though we all like to think Johnson and the Texans had a peaceful breakup, it appeared as if Johnson forced himself out of Houston. Bill O’Brien reportedly told Johnson he’d only have 40 receptions in 2015 and that didn’t please the face of the franchise. He didn’t like O’Brien’s vision for the franchise and wanted an elite quarterback throwing to him over his declining years, instead of waiting for the Texans to hopefully find one.
Johnson’s choice to leave Houston for Indianapolis hurt many of us, but it did make the most sense for Johnson. Andrew Luck is arguably the best young quarterback in the league and he plays in the weakest division in football, giving Johnson the best chance to make a long playoff run.
Unfortunately and ironically for Johnson, Luck missed most of the season with an injury and it’s the Texans in the driver’s seat to clinch the AFC South.
It’s easy to laugh at the decision now, but I can’t fault Johnson for anything.
One day I hope the Texans and Johnson can reunite. For now, though, I’m just happy we’re (likely) the one playing in January and the Colts chilling on their couch.
