Texans: Brandon Brooks Is The Offensive Line MVP

The Houston Texans did it.

They finally were able to get off the schneid in terms of being able to beat the Indianapolis Colts on their home turf.

Through their 13 seasons of existence, this was something that they had never done so it’s something that was quite special for this franchise.

But despite the Colts being banged up, the Texans knew they weren’t going roll over and let them win.

The Colts were competitive this past Sunday and worked as hard as they could for as long as they could to keep the Texans at bay.

The Colts were a bit hot from the start as the Texans continued to sputter on offensive.

The defense continued to look quite solid out there, making there opportunities for the Texans to get the ball back and make something of their possession.

But unfortunately, in early goings, the Texans didn’t have much opportunity to hold on it for long and had to punt quite profusely.

But there were some 4th down situations that they actually converted on so there’s certainly a positive from that as well.

In fact, they were 2-for-2 on the day!

But as much as we want to credit the defense or Brandon Weeden for graciously driving the Texans downfield for the game-winning touchdown off a Jaelen Strong catch, there’s another MVP that deserves recognition.

Just who am I talking about?

None other than right guard Brandon Brooks.

Offensive lineman are, in retrospect, shadows and get often overlooked.

Their job is one of the most difficult out of any position and yet other units/players will overshadow them.

But Brooks, our 3rd-round pick from 2012, has been mostly good since he has been here.

Although he hasn’t been perfect, nobody would expect that, he consistently shows up to work with his lunch pail, ready to go.

Not only that but Pro Football Focus continues to give him praise for his work.

Last week, Brooks earned a (+5.5) for his performance against the Colts.

This was the highest grade out of all of the Texans and it’s rightfully deserved.

PFF writes that it was his ability to minimize hurry activity — he only allowed two — off of 39 drop backs.

They also mentioned that he disrupted quite well with his blocking in the running game, with them giving him a (+4.7) in regard to that.

Alfred Blue had 20 carries for 107 yards so you can credit Brooks for a lot of those opportunities that he was free to rack up those yards.

PFF states that although he had fell off a bit after recording +8.1 in the first five games of the season, this game was one where he was allowed to morph back into his old self again after a horrid stretch of negatively-graded games.

I know, I know, you guys are probably wondering why I haven’t mentioned Duane Brown, he’s an incredible player and is currently on the Texans’ Mt. Rushmore, in my opinion but Brooks is a stud and is slowly working to take over the reins as a leader.

Mark my words — the Texans will reward him with a long-term deal in the off season and he’ll be around here for awhile.

Who were the other top performers for this week?

Kareem Jackson (+2.3), DeAndre Hopkins (+2.1), Jadeveon Clowney (+1.8) and A.J. Bouye (+1.7).

Go Texans.
