Houston Astros: Bring Back Colby Rasmus!

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s over Houston Astros fans.

The magical ride that this team has had through the postseason has now come to screeching halt.

A team that was successfully floating proudly through the clouds has now made a slow, controlled descent back to Earth.

It’s time to say our goodbyes and look forward toward what level of success the Astros should achieve next season.

Unlike many seasons that have preceded this one, the peculiar aspect is that it didn’t end in disappointment. Sure, I would’ve loved to advance to the ALCS as well as the World Series but we all have to realize that this team wasn’t even expected to be here and they were.

So each game that was played after the season was over was certainly a bonus for Astros’ fans paid for with house money.

Why do I say that?

The Astros were the last team standing in this round with the lowest payroll. They only had about $70 million committed to players this season which is good enough for third to last among the MLB franchises.

When you look at what this team has accomplished, that’s considered a heck of a feat.

Now I’m positive that will change next season as we’ll see a likely modest bump in spending but I still think the Astros’ brass feels they can win and not lead the league in payroll expenses.

But there’s one thing that the Astros need to make a priority — other than a fat Dallas Keuchel extension offer and a bolstering of the bullpen — and it’s quite important.

Just what am I talking about?

Re-signing outfielder Colby Rasmus.

  • He packed some heat toward the end of the season and throughout the postseason is a good reason why the Astros had life in these six games they had an opportunity to play.

Whenever we needed him, he was always there to make a key hit or belt a long bomb out to the outfield bleachers to push us ahead of our competition.

His overall body of work in the season may have been slightly lacking as far as at the plate but he has been money the entire postseason.

He has hit .381 with four home runs with a 1.773 OPS in the postseason versus a .238 BA, 25 HRs and a .789 OPS on the regular season.

He stepped up for the Astros big time and Jeff Luhnow has a big decision to make in terms of his retention.

He will certainly field many offers from teams looking for his services.

Rasmus signed a short-term, one-year deal with the Astros for $8 million.

I fully expect the Astros to give him a fair offer but will not go on an all-out bidding war to keep him on-board.

    More from Houston Astros

If another team offers him crazy money, he might be packing his bags to grab some more green.

But for a guy his age — he’s 29-years-old — I’m sure winning is a priority for him so he may be coaxed into staying as he was integral part of the Astros success.

We’ll have to see if whether money talks or if *you know what* walks.

I think our off season is going to be exciting so fasten your seat belts Astros fans — it’s going to be a hell of a ride.

Besides, we need to see more impressions of pro-wrestler Bret “The Hitman” Hart!

Go ‘Stros — I’m ready for another slice of Colby Jack!
