5. Clyde “The Glide” Drexler
Clyde Drexler comes in at number five on the list. Clyde had a lot of success before getting traded to the Rockets back in the 1994-1995 NBA season. Before coming to Houston, Drexler had already led the Portland Trail Blazers to two finals appearances one which they lost the “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons and the second loss coming at the hands of the Chicago Bulls.
Drexler was often thought of as the second best shooting guard of his era behind only Michael Jordan. When Drexler got to Houston he was here to help Hakeem Olajuwon win a championship for the second straight season. You’d almost want to categorize it as a dream come true for both.
This would be the first time they’ve teamed up since their high-flying days at the University of Houston that included an NCAA Finals appearance more than a decade earlier in 1983.
Although he’s now enjoying providing his insight as the Rockets’ primary television color analyst for ROOT Sports, there’s no way the Rockets would’ve won the 1995 chip without the likes of “The Glide.”
In four seasons with the Rockets, Drexler averaged 19 points per game, 5.4 assists per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. He did earn two All-Star appearances — 1996 and 1997 — in his last two years of his career before retiring as a Rocket in 1998. This is a respectable place on the Rockets all-time list when it comes to Drexler.
