Houston Astros MiLB Players Of The Month: August

The minor league system looks different this month after promotions and trade. This didn’t stop the Astros system from having some incredible performances in the month of August.

*Just a note, these are my picks for the month*

More from House of Houston

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies

HITTER: Tyler White, DH

  • August Stats: 23 G, .375 BA/.500 OBP/.594 SLG, 20 R, 7 2B, 4 HR, 32 RBI, 23 BB/17 SO

Another month down and once again my pick is Tyler White. He dominated again posting an on base percentage of .500 in the month of August. After doing well in Corpus, he has gone to AAA and made it look easy. Overall on the season he is hitting .332 with 24 2B, 14 HR, 93 RBI, 81 BB/67 K.

PITCHER: Mike Hauschild, RHP

  • August Stats: 2-1, 2.97 ERA, 30.1 IP, 27 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 8 BB, 31 SO, .233 BAA

Hauschild has been a guy who has flown under the radar quite a bit. After being drafted in the 33rd round in 2012 he has steadily moved through the system. On the season he has posted a 3.49 ERA with 102 strikeouts in 126.1 IP.

Also of note, Jordan Jankowski and James Hoyt put together some great months out of the Fresno bullpen.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks

  • HITTER: Jon Kemmer, OF

    • August Stats: 27 G, .376 BA/.462 OBP/.683 SLG, 22 R, 13 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, 19 RBI, 13 BB/13 SO, 5 SB

Kemmer has been a nice surprise for Astros fans this season. He was a late round pick who has hit at every level and continued to move through the system. Moving to AA he has shown good pop from the left side and has really cut down on the strike outs lately.

    PITCHER: Michael Feliz, RHP

    • August Stats: 1-1, 0.87 ERA, 31 IP, 19 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 BB, 33 SO, .176 BAA

After putting together a good month of July, Feliz was even better in August, allowing only three earned runs in five starts. He is making a push to be the #1 pitching prospect in the system. Hopefully we will see him in Houston soon.

    A+: Lancaster Jethawks

    HITTER: Alex Bregman, SS

    • August Stats: 26 G, .377 BA/.426 OBP/.553 SLG, 15 R, 6 2B, 4 3B, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 12 BB/10 SO, 8 SB

The #2 overall pick has really got it going lately. In August he showed off his elite hit tool smacking 43 hits in only 26 games. The high average and low strikeout rate is something Astros fans will love to see.

    PITCHER: Francis Martes, RHP

    • August Stats: 4-0, 0.68 ERA, 26.1 IP, 20 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 25 SO, .204 BAA

Martes was promoted to AA and already made one start with the Hooks but his August with Lancaster was too good to pass up. The 19-year old dominated a hitter friendly league. He has drawn rave reviews for his electric fastball/curveball combination and has really cemented himself as a top 100 prospect.

    A: Quad Cities River Bandits

    More from Houston Astros

    HITTERBryan Muniz, 1B

    • August Stats: 27 G, .310 BA/.442 OBP/.512 SLG, 8 2B, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 16 BB/13 SO

Muniz has had a solid season to this point after being a 22nd round pick in 2014. While he only has 5 HRs on the season he has 21 doubles and 38 BB/40 K in 67 games.

    PITCHER: Dean Deetz, RHP

    • August Stats: 4-1, 0.33 ERA, 27 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 9 BB, 22 K, .106 BAA

Deetz was flat out dominant in August. Only allowing 10 hits in 27 innings is crazy. On the season he now owns a 1.87 ERA after a great month.

    PITCHER: Justin Ferrell, RHP

    • August Stats: 2-1, 0.70 ERA, 25.2 IP, 15 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 9 BB, 23 SO, .174 BAA

Had to go with two guys here. Ferrell has had a strong season so far but really cranked it up with the strikeouts this month. He now has 37 K on the season with 23 coming this month. The 21-year old has a 1.95 ERA on the season.

    A-: Tri-City Valleycats

    HITTER: Johnny Sewald, OF

    • August Stats: 27 G, .340 BA/.451 OBP/.404 SLG, 22 R, 6 2B, 12 RBI, 18 BB/23 SO, 11 SB

Sewald has done exactly what you would expect a Luhnow college center fielder would do, get on base and steal bags. On the season now he is hitting .291 with 41 BB and 28 stolen bases in just 67 games.

    PITCHERKevin McCanna, RHP

    • August Stats: 3-0, 2.18 ERA, 20.2 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 19 K, .147 BAA

McCanna, drafted out of Rice, put together his best month this season. The 14th rounder did a great job limiting baserunners and has a season WHIP of 1.07.
