Houston Astros MiLB Players Of The Month: June

Another month in the books and another month of fantastic performances up and down the Houston Astros minor league system. All over the system guys are playing well, especially some under the radar players. Check out the best players in June:

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies

HITTER: Matt Duffy, 3B

  • June Stats: 27 G, .298 BA/.369 OBP/.442 SLG, 21 R, 4 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 24 RBI, 12 BB/24 SO

Duffy is a guy who has been overlooked his whole minor league career but to this point, all he has done is produce. In his minor league career he has hit .291. Also interesting, in 156 career AAA games he is hitting .280 with 20 HR, 104 RBI. Not bad at all.

PITCHER: Brady Rodgers, RHP

  • June Stats: 4-1, 3.07 ERA, 29.1 IP, 29 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 5 BB, 18 SO

Rodgers came in as an advanced college pitcher and has made it to AAA in a reasonable time. In April he posted an 8.22 ERA but has steadily improved with a 4.45 ERA in May and the 3.07 ERA in June.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks

  • HITTERJon Kemmer, OF

    • June Stats: 21 G, .403 BA/.451 OBP/.611 SLG, 9 R, 3 2B, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 6 BB/15 SO

Jon Kemmer has flown under the radar at this point after being drafted in the 21st round in 2013. He showed good power in Lancaster last season and has continued his success this year. He is hitting .323 with 9 HR, 32 RBI in 48 games.

    PITCHER: Mark Appel, RHP

    • June Stats: 2-0, 1.54 ERA, 23.1 IP, 15 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 20 SO (AA)

Mark Appel was promoted to AAA after posting a nice month in June. He struggled in his first start in AAA but it is nice to see him have a good month. There were actually quite a few deserving candidates including Josh Hader, Joe Musgrove, Chris Devenski, and Brian Holmes.

    A+: Lancaster Jethawks

    HITTER: AJ Reed, 1B

    • June Stats: 25 G, .434 BA/.529 OBP/.677 SLG, 24 R, 4 2B, 3B, 6 HR, 30 RBI, 19 BB/17 SO

Back-to-back hitter of the month for Reed. He was flat out incredible in June. The power well still there but he showed the ability to just get hits and limit the strikeouts this month.

    PITCHER: Kevin Comer, RHP

    • June Stats: 1-2, 2.65 ERA, 17 IP, 15 H, 5 ER, 6 BB, 15 SO

After posting good overall numbers, Comer was promoted to Lancaster. He has actually been better in the hitter friendly league so far. Another guy to keep an eye on.

    A: Quad Cities River Bandits

    HITTER: Jacob Nottingham, C

    • June Stats: 20 G, .329 BA/.389 OBP/.488 SLG, 12 R, 7 2B, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 5 BB/18 SO

Another guy who had a good month and got promoted. Although he played one game in Lancaster, he was too good to pass up. Nottingham has really been on the rise this season.

    PITCHER: Francis Martes, RHP

    • June Stats: 1-2, 1.23 ERA, 22 IP, 14 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 16 SO

Martes came over in the Cosart deal last summer. At only 19 he is playing in full season ball and really holding his own.
