With the 39th pick in Round 5 (175th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select…

Keith Mumphery!

Up until recent seasons, the Texans haven’t had a need to beef up their receiving game when ultimately it’s what needed to win championships.  One can look no further than the New England Patriots as far as their success over the past few seasons and their Super Bowl win this past February.

Now is the time more than ever to ensure that the Texans can’t miss in these later rounds because a lot of these guys found will likely have a solid role on our roster.

You don’t have to take my word for it, ESPN’s Trey Wingo mentioned that the 33 percent of an NFL team’s final roster are filled with picks in Rounds 4 through 7.

That’s an interesting stat so the Texans will need to do everything they can to make it count and ensure that our fan base is proud of their work.

After all, it’s the fans that our the fuel to the NFL’s massive engine right?

I’m thrilled that the Texans were able to find such a find in this round and Mumphery could certainly could be a diamond-in-the rough.

Mumphery is a hard-worker and is deft at being able to run his routes and create separation but it’s mostly when a particular play goes south.

  • His playing time severely diminished in his last two seasons at Michigan State because of this.  He went from starting 12 out of 13 games in 2012 to just starting three games out of 14 games in 2013.  However, he did rebound a bit and started 11 out 13 games last season.

He’s the epitome of what the Texans look for in terms of character, a leader and doesn’t need much help once he learns a particular skill set.

All in all, the Texans are giving this kid a chance to prove his worth to attempt to make a roster that’s already loaded at that position.

We’ll have to see in training camp.

It’s also important to note that the Texans were the only team to bring Mumphery in for a workout.

Mumphery in regard to him being drafted by the Texans and his future outlook:

    More from Houston Texans

Mumphery had more than 88 catches for 1,348 yards — 15.3 yards per catch — with seven touchdowns in a total of 54 games — 26 starts — during his collegiate career at Michigan State.  He also racked up 495 yards off 26 catches in 2014 at 19.0 yards per catch.

Mumphery also is a champion in the classroom with a degree in Communications and is currently working on his Master’s.

I like this pick and I really hope things pan out for this kid.

    Go Texans.
