Round 4

Pick #116 – Mitch Morse

6’5″, 305 – Center/Guard – Missouri

The 4th round is a vital round for the Texans as they cannot continue missing on players selected in the 4th and 5th rounds, where in recent years the results have been horrible.

  • The Texans would have been looking for a safety here but after the Stevie Brown signing, I don’t believe that will be now.  So we’re changing gears and taking an offensive lineman that I believe can ultimately beat out Ben Jones at center.  Ben Jones struggled quite a bit last year at guard so penciling him in as the starting center, I’m not totally comfortable with and I doubt the Texans are either.

Morse is a player that was a left tackle at a decent sized program at Missouri but has too short of arms for tackle in the NFL, however he’s very intelligent, an academic all-american and I like that in a center that calls the signals for the offensive line and is often inherently the leader of the unit.

Morse is also a better run and pass blocker than Jones.  He moves well the second level but also blocks with power. And for now he would add much needed depth on the offensive line.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, is a first round talent when healthy but will possibly sit out the 2015 season following a late season ACL injury.  The Texans do need to start thinking about replacing Johnathan Joseph.

If Ekpre-Olomu is gone or they just can’t get comfortable with him medically, another option will be cornerback Doran Grant.  Grant as we discussed in or look at this year’s look at cornerbacks is a Kareem Jackson-esque corner that isn’t a burner but tackles well and has enough skill set to learn to be a quality #2 corner.

    Alternate 1 – CB  Ifo Ekpre-Olomu                    Alternate 2 – CB  Doran Grant
