Round 3

Pick #82 – Tyler Lockett

5’11”, 175 – Wide Receiver – Kansas

The Texans would love a wide receiver to fall to them in the first round but at this point it’s hard to see that happening.  And not taking an inside or outside linebacker in the 2nd means a big drop off in ability to contribute quickly at either of those positions.

Fortunately the wide receiver group in this year’s draft is very deep as we discussed in this wide receivers article.  So if things don’t go the Texans way for receiver in the first or second, we believe the they will come back in the 3rd round and take an outstanding slot receiver/kick returner like Tyler Lockett.

Lockett is an extremely quick receiver with great hands, not just good hands, and has had a great deal of success as a punt returner.  And we’ve seen how the Patriots where Bill O’Brien’s roots lie, love to utilize slot receivers.  What the Texans don’t currently have is a slot receiver with good hands.

The other temptations here will be the depth at cornerback, particularly with a player like Rollins who could also end up at safety or an outside rush linebacker like Mauldin.  The concern with Mauldin, however, is he does not appear athletic enough to drop into coverage.

Alternate 1 – CB  Quentin Rollins                    Alternate 2 – OLB Lorenzo Mauldin
