There are only three, 3-down linebackers in this draft as of this point as we discussed in our inside linebackers profile. Others can and do develop certainly but the rest of the linebackers fall into categories of only run stuffers or coverage linebackers or guys that simply don’t look like potential starting caliber linebackers.
The Texans need to finally get a starting caliber inside linebacker to play alongside Brian Cushing and/or replace him next season. That is a job that will be very hard to fill beyond the 2nd round.
The other considerations here will be a wide receiver like Devin Smith the burner out of Ohio State or a recently falling big receiver like Jaelen Strong from Arizona State.
Second consideration will be an outside linebacker like Nate Orchard who can replace Brooks Reed. But we believe the need at middle linebacker is greater and Anthony should be the higher rated player among the three positions and has potential All-pro ability. The Texans need to hit on higher upside in the first two rounds.
Alternate 1 – WR Devin Smith Alternate 2 – OLB Nate Orchard
