Houston Astros Announce Their Opening Day Roster
By Yoni Pollak
The Houston Astros have officially announced their 25-man roster for opening day.
Josh Fields has been bothered by a hamstring injury this spring. The Astros hoped he’d be ready for opening day but they’ll give him extra rest. With Fields on the DL the Astros kept Will Harris around. Harris will likely head to AAA once Fields is healthy. Brad Peacock will also start the year on the DL, though there’s no word on where he will pitch once he is healthy.

There’s no surprise L.J. Hoes was sent to AAA. He was no higher than 6th on the Astros outfield depth chart. Jon Singleton started the spring strong but struggled over the last few weeks. It makes sense to get him regular at-bats in the minors with him behind Chris Carter and Evan Gattis at 1B/DH. Teams usually only carry a maximum of two lefty relievers, meaning Kevin Chapman had no where to go with Tony Sipp and Joe Thatcher making the team.
The Astros outfield situation is finally resolved with Alex Presley being designated for assignment. The Astros will likely start Jake Marisnick and Robbie Grossman will come off the bench as the team’s 4th OF. Evan Gattis could also see some time in the outfield. The Astros would like to keep Presley but it’s possible they will trade him as well.
So that’s your 2015 opening day roster for your Astros. It looks much better than last year’s and there’s some people expecting bigger things this season.
