I can’t believe that the Astros will make a big push for one of the top starters (Max Scherzer or Jon Lester). I just think at this point they will cost too much money. So the Astros could look to the second tier of free agent pitchers. McCarthy is in that tier.

McCarthy has had success with Oakland in 2011, 2012 but struggled in his short time with the D-Backs. This season he was traded to the Yankees where he pitched great. In 14 starts for New York he posted a 2.89 ERA, 3.22 FIP, 90.1 IP, 13 BB/82 SO. If the Astros are interested in signing another veteran pitcher similar to the Feldman signing, McCarthy could be a very interesting option.
Other Pitching Options: Ervin Santana
