Some More Houston Texans Quarterback Situation Ranting

facebooktwitterreddit

Because you can’t hear me on any local sports radio stations in Houston quite yet, you’re stuck with my Texans ranting right here.

I did a good amount of yelling – though I didn’t even hit CAPS LOCK – on Twitter yesterday, but I’m here to sum up some of those thoughts. I wrote many of my thoughts on Ryan Fitzpatrick and how he should benched previous to the loss on Monday night, and don’t worry, that hasn’t changed.

So let’s start with this…

There is ZERO reason that Ryan Fitzpatrick should be the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans for the rest of this season. Zero. None. Challenge me, I dare you.

You think the Texans could win with him? You’re wrong. And that’s the current problem with the Texans staff. They think they could win. That, or neither Ryan Mallett or Tom Savage are ready to start. And I don’t buy that.

Bill O’Brien, in yesterday’s press conference, said that the Mallett has improved everyday in practice but he still needs to improve his accuracy. Let me ask you something, Bill and other Texans fans…How bad is Mallett’s accuracy that it’s still not better than Fitzpatrick?!? The next time Fitzpatrick throws a nice deep ball will be the first time he throws a nice deep ball.

Fitzpatrick seems to be very streaky. He’ll make strong throws at times, but even some of his “good” throws aren’t perfect.

Now let’s make this clear for the millionth time; I’m NOT blaming Fitzpatrick for the Texans 3-4 record. The Texans have tons of holes, and he’s just occupying one of them.

So, Texans fans, remember last year that quarterback named Matt Schaub? Remember how he pick-sixed his way to the backup QB gig in Oakland?!? What did the Texans do then? They decided to go with the unknown. They gave Case Keenum the gig, knowing very well that he could either get the team right back on track, or make them even worse.

Now how much worse were they because they made that move instead of sticking with Schaub? We’ll never know, but the Texans made the correct move going with Keenum. Why? Schaub was done. His time in Houston was finished. The season was already in doubt, but they still had a “chance” at the playoffs. Still, they went with the unknown at QB, knowing that they needed to find out what they had in him for the next season.

If Keenum played well enough to win 3 or 4 games, he may still be the starter here in Houston. If Keenum never played a snap in Houston last year, he may have been given an opportunity to start this season, because no one really knew what type of QB he could be.

More from Houston Texans

The Texans need to make the exact same move as they made last year. They NEED to see what they have in Mallett. They NEED to see if Mallett can be the Texans starting QB in the future or if they need to look into the draft next year. They NEED to make this move. Simply starting Fitzpatrick the rest of the season could push this franchise back a few years, wasting valuable minutes for Mallett and possible Tom Savage.

The Texans aren’t winning this season. With their GM’s track record, there’s no reason to believe they’ll be able to make the right moves to bring in the right players and depth to improve this team. There are too many holes to claim the Texans are a contender. I just wish the coaching staff would realize this.

In the meantime, Houston, as long as your starting quarterback is Fitzpatrick, this team is mediocre.

Get ready for pick #17!
