Houston Astros Blast Their Way To Sweep Over Kansas City Royals
By Yoni Pollak
The Houston Astros hit three home runs on their way to a 9-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. This was the Astros fifth straight win as they completed the sweep of the Royals today.
The offense got it started with (another) George Springer home run in the first inning, scoring Jose Altuve who lead off the game with a walk. The second inning brought in another two Astros, via a Dexter Fowler two-RBI single with the bases loaded. Carlos Corporan‘s RBI-double in the third inning gave the Astros a 5-0 lead, plenty of run support for Jarred Cosart.

Cosart didn’t have his best outing today, though he did earn the win. In five innings, Cosart allowed just four hits, two runs (one earned), while walking two and striking out one batter. He threw 55 of 95 pitches for strikes but did a good job getting outs.
Jerome Williams allowed just one run on a solo shot to Brett Hayes in his two innings of relief. Darin Downs worked a scoreless eighth, while Kyle Farnsworth finished the game with a scoreless ninth.
It was the Chris Carter show in the fifth and sixth innings. After being benched for three straight games, Carter went yard in both innings, one a solo shot and the other a three-run blast. The Astros haven’t had great production from the 1B/DH spot this season and they definitely could use a hot Carter bat in the lineup.
Today was a pretty good day unless you watched the team defensively. Jonathan Villar overthrew Jesus Guzman trying to turn two when he had no chance at actually turning the double play. Jose Altuve misplayed a catchable popup in the sun, ending his errorless streak at 88 games. Dexter Fowler took his time getting to a Hosmer hit, and when Hosmer tried to stretch it to a double, Folwer realized in time and threw a strike to Altuve. The throw was on time, but Altuve didn’t apply the tag correctly with Hosmer doing a great job avoiding the tag. That play would have ended the inning, but instead Cosart allowed another run afterwards which shouldn’t have happened.

The Astros also left way too many men on base. 11 hits and 10 walks is great production from the offense, but they left many of those guys on base. The Astros have lots of power and have driven in many runs via the home run, however, they have struggled to keep innings going with base hits. They scored nine runs today, seven of them via the home run, while leaving 26 men on base (according to Yahoo). Days like today it is fine, but they need to do a better job of stringing together hits.
Regardless of the mishaps, it’s hard to complain about the Astros right now. They are red hot and we all just hope it continues.
The Astros now head home for a four game home-stand against the Baltimore Orioles. Tomorrow’s game is scheduled for 7:10 PM and can be seen on CSN Houston.
