Houston Astros MiLB Week In Review

As I posted in my nightly recap earlier this week, Asher Wojciechowski made his 2014 debut and did well. Alex White also made his debut this week. There were some promotions as well; Rudy Owens made his major league debut this week, Brett Oberholtzer and Robbie Grossman were also promoted back to the Astros. Another guy really pushing for a call to the majors is Domingo Santana who had a great week. Here are the numbers!

AAA: Oklahoma City Redhawks (28-23) went 4-3 this week.

Hernandez has really been a pleasant surprise this season. Since his move up to AAA he is hitting .315 and has 7 BB/7 SO. Torreyes was slumping but rebounded this week to bring his average up to .298. Domingo Santana has been awesome this season. After only hitting .252 last season in AA he is hitting .294 this season in AAA. He also has a .878 OPS which is great for a 21-year old at the Triple-A level. Singleton didn’t have a great week but he drew a good amount of walks. Stassi had a nice week and has 28 RBI in 38 games.

Folty has continued to pitch well although I would like to see more strikeouts than walks. He hasn’t allowed more than 2 ER since April 11th. Buchanan had a complete game shutout this week along with another quality start. He is sporting a 2.83 ERA in 57.1 IP. And then there is Nitro. He has been pitching brilliant of late. He has a 2.53 ERA on the season with 41 SO in 45.2 IP.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (26-23) went 4-2 this week.

  • Kyle Smith, RHP: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO

It is really nice to see Fontana get the bat going. He now has a .288 BA with a .419 OBP and 14 2B. DeShields continues to get on base and steal bases. He is hitting .268 with 17 SB in 29 games. Tucker found his power stroke this week. He now has 11 HR and 31 RBI in 49 games. In his last 10 games he has 5 HR, 9 RBI and 7 BB.

Shirley has been so impressive this season. He has a 1.51 ERA in 47.2 IP with 12 BB/51 SO. I am not sure what else he has to do to earn a promotion to AAA. The Astros may just be waiting for a spot to open up for him. Smith has put together back-to-back good starts after initially struggling in AA. In his last two starts he has gone 12 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 SO. Hauschild has been equally impressive in his time in AA. He has a 1.59 ERA in 17 IP with 1 BB/17 SO.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (29-22) went 3-4 this week.

  • Tony Kemp2B: .269 BA (7-26), 8 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 6 BB/1 SO, 5 SB
  • Rio Ruiz3B: .200 BA (5-25), 4 R, HR, 3 RBI, 7 BB/1 SO
  • Jordan ScottOF: .300 BA (9-30), 3 R, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 2 SB
  • Josh HaderLHP: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO

Correa missed a few games earlier this week but came back with a vengeance. He is now hitting .312 on the season with an OPS of .842. He also has 4 2B, 2 HR, 10 RBI in his last 10 games. Kemp continues to tear it up and get on base at a high rate. He is hitting .350 with a .442 OBP.

This tweet was before Sunday’s game where he went 3-5. Teoscar Hernandez leads Lancaster in XBHs. He has 43 RBI in 46 games this season and 16 RBI in his last 10 games. Though Rio didn’t hit a whole lot he is drawing alot of walks which is a good sign. Perdomo is hitting great but he is 24-years old in A+.

Hader continues to impress and is really making the Bud Norris trade look nice. He has a 2.64 ERA with 60 SO in 47.2 IP this season. He has not allowed more than two runs in a start since April 17th.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (24-25) went 4-3 this week.

Holberton has been tearing up Midwest League pitching since joining QC. He has a .364 BA with only 12 SO in 28 games. Phillips continues to play well and I would like to see him get a shot in Lancaster this season. He has 7 2B, 7 3B, 3 HR and 7 SB in 46 games. Gregor finally got the monkey off of his back hitting his first HR this season.

The pitching has been fantastic for QC. Former 2nd round pick, Houser, has put together 3 straight good starts. In those games he has gone 17 IP, 12 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 14 SO. Really nice to see Feliz bouncing back too. I know alot of people had high hopes for him this season but he struggled out the gate. In May he has a 2.08 ERA in 13 IP with 3 BB/15 SO.
