Houston Dynamo: Brad Davis Will Be On 23-Man USA Roster For World Cup

Houston Dynamo’s Brad Davis will be making his way to Brazil this summer for the 2014 World Cup.

Many didn’t expect Davis to make the final 23-man roster for this year’s World Cup. However, Davis’ strong play this season as well as his two key assists in last October’s World Cup Qualifier earned him his ticket to Brazil. Davis will be joined by former Dynamo players Geoff Cameron and Chris Wondolowski.

Landon Donovan will NOT be making the trip to Brazil this summer. Here’s what Hal Kaiser of Orange In The Oven had to say about the surprising move:

The biggest surprise in the squad is the omission of long-time national team stalwart Landon Donovan. Donovan has been in Klinsmann’s dog house since he took time off from the national team in 2012/2013. Despite that, few expected Donovan to be left out of the squad and the decision will no doubt come under fire should the US struggle in Brazil.

In place of Donovan is the 18-year old Bayern Munich player, Julian Green, who recently switched his national team allegiance from Germany to the United States. Klinsmann’s decision will no doubt remind some of the 1998 decision by then national team coach Steve Sampson to include David Régis, a player of French origin, in his squad over Jeff Agoos.

That move backfired on Sampson and was part of a horrendous performance by the US in the ’98 World Cup. We can only hope that selecting Green over Donovan does not have a similar impact on the team.
