Houston Astros Minor League Recap: May 21st
A guy very close to the majors made his 2014 debut yesterday, he is Asher Wojciechowski. Asher was drafted in the 1st round of the 2010 MLB draft out of Citadel by the Toronto Blue Jays. Asher was traded to the Astros as part of the 10-player deal in the summer of 2012. Since coming to the Houston system, Asher has moved through the system quickly and reached AAA last season. Last season between AA and AAA he compiled a 11-8 record with a 3.32 ERA in 160 IP, 133 H, 59 ER, 51 BB, 131 SO. He did not disappoint in his debut.
AAA: Oklahoma City Redhawks (26-21) won 6-1 (BOX SCORE)
- Adron Chambers, CF: 1-5
- Jon Singleton, 1B: 0-4, R, BB
- Domingo Santana, LF: 1-3, R, RBI, 2 BB
- Enrique Hernandez, SS: 1-3, 2 R, BB
- Jonathan Meyer, 3B: 2-3, 2B, RBI
- Andrew Simunic, RF: 1-3, R, RBI, BB
- Asher Wojciechowski, RHP: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO
- Paul Clemens, RHP: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 SO
- Kevin Chapman, LHP: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO
Singleton has 10 BB in his last 10 games, although he has struck out 13 times. Santana has 3 HR, 8 RBI and a 8 BB/8 SO ratio in his last 10 games. Hernandez is hitting .319 since being promoted to AAA and has only struck out 6 times in 31 games. Wojo made his debut and did well. I am assuming he was on a pitch count as he only threw 66 pitches. 5 SO in 4 IP is nice to see. The OKC bullpen threw 5 scoreless innings in relief.
AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (24-21) won 7-2 (BOX SCORE)
- Delino DeShields, CF: 2-5, R, SB
- Nolan Fontana, 2B: 1-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB

- Thomas Shirley, LHP: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO
- Andrew Robinson, RHP: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO
DeShields was in a little slump but has 5 hits in his last two games and is also 13/15 in stolen bases. Fontana has really been hitting the ball better recently. He is hitting .367 with HR, 8 RBI and 12 BB in his last 10 games. Tucker has rediscovered his power swing, 4 HR in his last 5 games and 10 on the season. Shirley has been spectacular all season long and is really pushing for a promotion. He now has a 1.51 ERA in 47.2 IP, 30 H, 8 ER, 12 BB, 52 SO.
A+: Lancaster Jethawks (27-20) lost 5-4 in 10 innings (BOX SCORE)
- Tony Kemp, 2B: 1-4, R, BB, SB
- Teoscar Hernandez, CF: 2-5, R, 3B, RBI, SB
- Carlos Correa, SS: 2-5, R, HR, 2 RBI, SB
- Rio Ruiz, 3B: 0-3, 2 BB
- Dan Gulbransen, RF: 1-3, R, 2B
- Jordan Scott, LF: 1-4, 2B, RBI
- Kyle Westwood, RHP: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO
- Gonzalo Sanudo, RHP: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 B, 1 SO
Kemp keeps on racking up the runs and stolen bases. He now has 52 runs and 19 SB in 45 games. Hernandez with another extra base hit. He has 4 HR and 18 RBI in his last 10 games. Really nice to see Correa hit a HR, his third on the season. Correa has 3 HR and 35 RBI in 37 games. The pitching wasn’t great but not too bad. After giving up 4 ER in 3 IP in his A+ debut, Sanudo turned it around this time.
A: Quad Cities River Bandits (20-23) game was suspended
It was 4-4 after the 6th inning and the power went out. I guess they were not able to fix it soon enough and the game was suspended at this point. Could it be a conspiracy? New Orleans over again? Rather than give partial stats, we will have the full stats for this game whenever it is completed.
