The Influence of Houston Sports Talk Radio
In short, the answer is to all of the questions that I posed above is, no. None of those are real qualifications to be a host on the radio. Sure, those things help out. But just because they went to school, or even played in the NFL doesn’t mean that they’ll be a good host. It takes more than that.
They have certain traits that make them qualified; well-spoken, common sense, sports knowledge, entertaining, easy to relate too, and most importantly, not a dumbass. So maybe I misspoke a tad bit, with what I stated above. Seeing as some people are stupid, and those same stupid people call into sports radio stations. (maybe throw “patience” in that list of traits above, as well)
Not everyone is qualified to be a sports radio host, and what each station has been able to do is capture a niche audience. Kudos to the local guys we have here in Houston. They influence our thoughts as listeners, and challenge us on sports, more than they know.
Too bad I can’t say the same for the national shows. Jay Mohr, Mike and Mike, etc… I’d rather watch “Two Girls, One Cup” than listen to their sports takes.
Jay Mohr reminds me of, “Weenie and the Butt” from Family Guy.
I asked twenty people on how sports talk radio has influenced them. Here’s what how each station influences them in each category:
All of the bloggers on our site agreed that they wouldn’t be writing about sports if it wasn’t for these guys that we hear on the radio everyday. How have they influenced your sports takes?
