There has been no doubt that the Houston Rockets have been pursuing the sharp-shooting New York Knicks forward.

Carmelo Anthony, the 10-time all-star has also shown his interest in the Houston Rockets. There are many insiders saying that Anthony has an interest in playing alongside James Harden and Chris Paul.

There have been many times that a trade for Anthony has been close, the Rockets have been “at the two yard line” of a potential deal for Melo, but still, nothing has been official.

I personally have a theory as to why an Anthony deal hasn’t gone through. There obviously has been a new general manager hired for the Knicks in Scott Perry. This has been a reason there has been some sort of a hold-up, but I think there’s something bigger going on here.

This is a completely independent thought that I’ve had, I have no sources telling me this, it’s just a theory. I believe that Carmelo Anthony is trying to force the Knicks to buy out his contract. I have multiple reasons to believe this, and it all adds up.

The Rockets/Cavs get to keep more assets

The belief is that the bidding war for Anthony is between these two teams. The Portland Trailblazers have been added to the mix recently, but the consensus is that it’s between these two.

If either team were to trade for Anthony, they’d have to give up players who make similar money as him (Kevin Love, Ryan Anderson). They’d also have to give up young pieces.

If Anthony were to be bought out he’d be able get all of his money from the Knicks and go to a team for a minimum contract. That would allow that team to keep it’s high-priced players.

The Banana Boat Reunion

A few years ago, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Anthony all vacationed together. There is a famous picture of James, Paul and Wade on a banana boat that everyone likes to make fun of on social media.

These four are all close friends and have expressed a want to play on the same team at one point. This would give them the opportunity to do so in 2018.

Let’s say Carmelo Anthony gets a buyout then signs with Cleveland or Houston for a one-year contract. Those four would then become free agents in 2018. This would give the superstars the chance to come together and play alongside one another.

It is just a theory and might not be at all the reason as to why Anthony hasn’t been traded. However, in situations like these, it’s always fun to play the ‘what-if’ game.
