We’re less than two days away from the NBA Draft and there’s a strong possibility that a Houston Rockets marquee player could be on the block for a trade.

Who am I talking about?  I’m talking about none other than the Houston Rockets point guard Patrick Beverley, who is the heart-and-soul of this team!  As you know, at this time of the year, general manager Daryl Morey has just about any movable asset up for bid as he’s always working hard to make this team better.

That’s one of Morey’s strong points, always swinging for the fences and going for the gold.  It’s not easy to beat the Golden State Warriors, who are out on the West Coast creating a dynasty of championships so the objective of the rest of the league, notwithstanding the Houston Rockets, is to find a way to crush them to a sound defeat.

That may not happen any time soon but you know teams are going to maneuver and spend gobs of cash to make it happen.  The NBA salary cap is expected to increase modestly from $94.1 million to $101M for 2017-18 so teams that were already spending at the ceiling will have to get creative.

In fact, Sean Deveney of the Sporting News reported that it’s quite possible that he’d moved before the trade deadline as the team is rumored to be actively shopping him to which would be no surprise to me.

He mentions a deal could be done by Draft Day although it won’t be official until July 1, which is when free agency begins.

Even Beverley confirmed himself that his days as a Rocket may be numbered when replying to one of his followers:

Beverley’s four-year, $25 million contract signed before the insane escalation of the salary cap is extremely friendly for potential suitors.  He’ll earn $5.5 million this season and his $5 million for 2018-19 is not guaranteed.  Morey knew this when he inked him to this deal and it’s getting ready to pay HUGE dividends.

More from House of Houston

Are we going after Paul George? Chris Paul? Greg Monroe?  I’m sure all and many more on the Rockets’ cross-hairs.  I just trust what Morey is doing and hopefully he hits the bullseye in terms of seeking his prey…er uh…highly-coveted free agents that will make a difference on this roster.

It can happen and besides, with all of this money being thrown around in today’s NBA, it would be naive to think that Bev wouldn’t want his piece of the pie.  And it’s only fair, considering the hard work he has put into perfecting his craft and adding even more to his repertoire.

If you would’ve told me that Bev would be shooting close to 40 percent from behind-the-arc in 2012, I’d would’ve said you were crazy.  But he persevered and adapted to changes that were not only being made to Rockets’ mantra but the league-wide as well.

Bev is one of my favorite players but I understand that it’s a business and if he has to be sacrificed in order for this team to get better, then so be it.  Being tenured with one team is rarity in professional sports these days and with five seasons under his belt, he’s been a fixture of this team the longest.  That’s credit to his work-ethic and his invaluable character.

Next: The Rockets have a tight window to win a championship

We’ll have to see what happens.

Beverley, 28, averaged 9.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists off 46.3 percent shooting from the field and 38.2 percent from three through 67 games in 2016-17.

Go Rockets.
