The Houston Texans threw a Hail Mary in the free agency market, had the pass caught in the end zone but it didn’t count because time expired.

That’s what I feel like in terms of the Houston Texans working on negotiations with Tony Romo.

The “Hail Mary” was going after Romo, the caught pass was his interest in the team and the time expired was his decision to retire from the gridiron.

Although I knew the odds of him returning back to the field were somewhere around 50/50, considering his health, Romo felt he made the right decision as far as moving forward.

As reported yesterday, Romo will hook up with CBS Sports and join the lead broadcast team pairing up with Jim Nantz and allowing Phil Simms to fall by the wayside, likely a demotion.

His deal will likely cover multi-years and will be worth seven figures per — possibly eight — to call games three hours per night in the broadcast booth.

Romo said the decision wasn’t easy but felt the deal that he was offered was one he couldn’t

refuse.

During an hour-long media session yesterday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Houston Texans were at the top of his list.

Here’s what Romo had to say:

"“Obviously, Houston was at the top of the list of teams I looked at,” Romo said. “It was a very difficult decision. I went back and forth many times. It had nothing to do with the Texans. It had everything to do with CBS.”"

He also praised Bill O’Brien and the coaching staff:

"“Their head coach is very good,” Romo said. “He keeps them playing hard, a very disciplined football team, gives them an opportunity to succeed each week. They have some incredibly gifted football players. That’s one of the reasons that made it a tough decision … They like Savage and they like Brandon. That coaching staff is in the office 12 hours per day studying play-calling, the route tree, what was successful and what wasn’t successful. They’re going to come up with a better plan. I think they have a chance to be very successful. They’re very talented.”"

He also closed the door for any likelihood that he’d be returning back under center:

"“Do I envision playing football? Absolutely not,” Romo said. “Do I expect to get some calls? Yes, that’s the reality. You never say never. I just tell you it’s about 99 percent. There’s no part of me that wants to play right now.”"

So now that’s been settled, the Texans have work to do in regard to bringing a quarterback into the fold.

At this moment, Tom Savage remains the top option for the Texans but free agent options such as Jay Cutler and Colin Kaepernick remain available.

And it will likely stay that way as well as I’d be intrigued but not necessarily excited about those options.

The team can also go to the draft — we know that Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Mitch Trubisky and DeShone Kizer are all available.

Now that the QB situation is dire, the Texans may want to try to move up to get the guy they want.

I think that Trubisky would be the best fit for the Texans but it’d be fun to see other guys mentioned in the fold because of their incredible athleticism at the position.

It remains to be seen what the Texans will do at quarterback but at least we know that Romo there won’t a No. 9 Texans jersey stitched up for a quarterback.

It’ll likely be No. 3.

We’ll find out soon.

Go Texans.
