Yes, the unthinkable occurred and that was the news of Brock Osweiler being jettisoned from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in usual fashion, was the one that broke the story:

In addition, the Texans were able to swap picks in the upcoming draft as part of the terms of the deal.

The Texans will receive the Cleveland Browns 4th-rounder this season — giving them two picks in that round — and the Browns get the Texans’ 6th-round pick.

When I first caught wind of the news, I was stunned.

But I knew that the only way that Brock would be traded is if draft picks are attached with him.

There’s no team in their right mind that would do a deal straight up for that man.

This also was a move to clear salary cap space as well.

The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson reported that the Texans cleared $10 million of cap space, pushing up their money available to $31.4 million.

Although it’s not evident, one would think they’re trying to get enough money not only to get the guys they need but to go out and get a veteran quarterback that’s available to get us to the ultimate goal of the getting that coveted chip.

Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden are under contract with the Texans, each with one year left on their respective deals with $690,000 and $2 million remaining respectively.

None of these guys are expected to be the answer at quarterback but they certainly add depth to the position as they’ve both proved they go in and win games when asked upon.

Each stepped in when their counterpart was either hurt or inadequate and won games for the team.

Will Tony Romo be a part of the Houston Texans?

How about Jay Cutler?

Regardless, there’s going to be a move made by the Texans that will knock our socks off and all signs point to Romo being under center but I could be wrong.

Hell, I thought it’d be next to impossible.

And here were are…

Osweiler isn’t expected to be on the Browns for long and will be released if he can’t be included in another package they’re putting together for picks.

There’s a new sheriff in town in Cleveland and Paul DePodesta, highly-regarded as one of the brightest minds in sports management is running the team.

He’s like Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, trying to make deals that work analytically to make their team better.

DePodesta is going to need some time because the Browns are a mess but he may have their haphazard of a franchise turned around quicker than one may think.

The Browns are going to be armed with a war chest of draft picks — they have 11 of them this year — and up to $106 million in cap space.

That’s a mine compared to the Texans paltry $31.4 million.

The Browns have been down this road before but I think it will be different this time because I trust that DePodesta knows what he’s doing.

Let’s just hope that Jimmy Haslam doesn’t intervene and screw with what DePodesta is doing.

You know, deep down in our hearts — especially mine — you want to root for Browns’ fans because they’ve suffered enough and deserve to have a quality product out on the field.

They’ve gone in the right direction by hiring Hue Jackson, a bright offensive mind and leader of men so we’ll see how that pans out.

But overall, BOTH teams win in this deal as each got what they wanted.

And we all don’t have to worry about seeing Brock having to trot out the tunnel for Week 1 of the 2017 season.

Thank goodness because it’d be such a letdown for the team, the fans and the city of the Houston.

Go Texans.
