It’s been nearly a month since the Houston Texans have played a game of competitive football.

And from the looks of the team’s ugly AFC Wild Card match up with the Kansas City Chiefs, some would say it has been a bit longer than that, dating back to December 2015.

We saw a complete meltdown of this team in that game.

Everything that they worked hard for — playing with pride, doing what they needed to do to clinch a playoff berth and having some swagger while doing it — all went out the window in that forgettable first-round of football.

The glaring issue that this team continues to make light of around the league is the undeniable thirst for a talented quarterback to lead this team.

Brian Hoyer choked big-time when the bright lights were on such a big stage but that’s neither here or there.

He’s probably the consummate professional and an even better human being.

But when you’re in a profession that’s heavily-hinged on results that are not desirable, one can measure the length of patience by fans and NFL execs in nanoseconds.

We certainly hope that the Texans work to quench that thirst this off season as there’s a considerable amount of talent in this year’s draft.

This is not a draft full of elite quarterbacks but there’s a enough talent out there that can be developed.

You’ve heard the names — Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Christian Hackenberg, Paxton Lynch among many that will be available.

With Texans’ owner Bob McNair publicly admitting that this team needs an elite quarterback to lead, this definitely Priority No. 1 in their modus operandi.

With the Texans owning the No. 22 pick this season, there’s good chance that they will land one of those guys or have the ability to trade up for their guy.

But let’s say we get one of those guys, it’s highly-likely none of them will be ready to start so they’ll need a couple of seasons to sit down and learn the pro game before they’re ready.

Many of you would agree with me that David Carr would’ve likely been a better quarterback had he not been thrown to the wolves when Day 1 — a red-letter date — came for the Texans.

I propose that we draft a quarterback high this year and bring him along like he deserves.

But while he’s developing, there needs to be someone that can hold the reins of this team together and get us wins in the column in the meantime.

I know of guy that could get the job done.

Just who am I talking about?

I’m talking about Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon.

I’m sure you had to pause for second and think about who he is but you can’t deny the potential this young quarterback has.

It hasn’t been quite the run that he hoped in Tampa as his job had continued to play musical chairs with Josh McCown whenever his game would go south.

And now he’s cemented in that chair with the Bucs selecting Jameis Winston with the No. 1 pick last year.

Although he was benched early in 2014, there’s no way you can’t question the potential of Glennon.

Although he had notched a 4-9 record in 2014, he passed for 19 touchdowns to nine interceptions for an 83.9 quarterback rating.

He also passed for 2,608 yards with a 59.4 completion percentage in 13 games — all starts.

He is your traditional quarterback in every sense of the word — he stays in the pocket, he’s patient and can usually find his man.

He doesn’t have the absolute strongest of arms but he has enough to get the job done.

It’s amazing he was able to put up those numbers with the weapons he had in Tampa!

But think about if he were given the keys for just a short while here in Houston.

He would have better weapons and I think Bill O’Brien and George Godsey could coach this guy up to learn the system that they run.

But what makes him traditional could be his biggest Achilles’ heel — he’s not that mobile whatsoever.

That could be a thorn in our side and who knows?

This could be Hoyer 2.0!

That’s a scary thought but because Glennon isn’t even 30 yet and that his contract is quite cap-friendly, those should be many reasons why the Texans should go after him.

Glennon is currently on the last year of his four-year rookie deal paying him a base salary of $675,000 but up to $987,656 with all of his bonuses included for 2016.

He’ll be an unrestricted free agent in 2017.

When Winston came into town, there were at least six teams willing to make on offer on Glennon and I’m absolutely positive the Texans were one of those teams.

The interest is still there for him — but the question would be if the Texans have any type of infatuation.

So I think Rick Smith needs to get Bucs’ GM Jason Licht on Line 1 to at least kick the tires and see what they’d want for him.

He won’t regret it.

Or he may — Glennon bears a No. 8 jersey and we all know there’s a considerable amount of negative stigma from past Texans’ QB’s that have worn that number.

Glennon, 26, passed for 1,417 yards with 10 touchdowns to six interceptions for an 83.3 quarterback rating before getting benched after six games — five starts — in 2014, his last active year.

Let’s go for it — go Texans!
