Houston Rockets: Ty Lawson To Be Traded Before The Deadline?

Houston Rockets fans — what a tough loss last night.

I know many of us weren’t able to stick with the late game last night on the West coast against the Los Angeles Clippers but it certainly was a shootout with both teams scoring a combined 272 points.

But it was an unfortunate 140-132 loss.

This is the first time the Rockets have fell to the Clips this season but it was bound to happen as they’ve played really well as of late.

But despite what run the Clips would be on, the Rockets usually enable themselves to pick them apart and put a stop to it.

But not last night.

Furthermore, it’s January 19 and the team possesses a 22-21 record with exactly a month to go before the NBA’s trade deadline of Feb. 19.

This team is only five losses away from their mark last season where they finished the regular season 56-26.

This team has gloriously underachieved throughout and I honestly think a move has to be made in order for us to excel to heights that we haven’t seen all season.

It makes that five-game win streak they earned last week a distant memory after getting pummeled by the Cleveland Cavaliers this past Friday night.

Here’s the deal — the Rockets need to make a move before the deadline to make this team better — we still don’t have the play maker at the point position and it continues to be like last year, where James Harden is in command of the offense.

That shouldn’t be the case, it should flow through the point guard!

Although this method worked last year, it’s crashing and burning as Harden is not quite the same player he was last season.

We all know what it is — he has been non-committal on defense and I think it’s hurting his overall repertoire as well as the team.

Anyway, I think the person who needs to moved is Ty Lawson.

He has shown flashes of brilliance but has fell far below expectations of his role this season.

He looks lost out there, as if he doesn’t know what his role should be.

I think he needs to be where he can be in charge of the offense like he was with the Denver Nuggets and doesn’t have to worry about if he’s stepping on anybody’s toes.

The Houston Chronicle’s Brian T. Smith interviewed Rockets general manager Daryl Morey for a column he wrote for this week about the state of the team at the midpoint of the season.

Here’s what he had to say about Ty:

"“Huge upside. We know he’s capable of a very high level of play. He’s done it every year he’s been in the league. … At times the fit on our roster has been challenging for him and us. But I feel like J.B. has been working through that.”"

That quote from Morey is basically code for “nope, I haven’t found a taker for your salary yet but I’m working on trying to get you out of here.”

Why else would you keep a guy that has trouble fitting with the roster?

Lawson will make $12.4 million this season so it’s clearly obvious that with his lackluster-style of play and his hefty contract that he’s been tough sell for other NBA teams.

He had one more year of guaranteed money — $13.2 million — for 2016-17 but he waived that option has part of the condition to be a Houston Rocket.

The team still has the option to pick it up but with all signs pointing to a likely trade, that’s not going to happen.

But overall, the Rockets have to do something with this roster or we may — perish the thought — not qualify for the playoffs.

They’re holding onto the 7th-seed for dear life but as with any facet of pro sports, there are no assurances.

So as we inch closer to the deadline, keep an eye on how they’re using Lawson which may be more of an indicator of numbered his days are with this team.

Oh, and they can throw in Terrence Jones too in a trade, he has been playing like steaming garbage as of late and I’m not sure why.

Lawson, 28, has averaged 6.3 points, 4.1 assists and 24.3 minutes per game through 36 games (11 starts) for 2015-16.

Go Rockets.
