Quick Recap: Texans Down Jets 24-17 For Their 3rd Straight Win

The Houston Texans put together an impressive win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week.

Nobody in their right mind was expecting the Texans to win that game, including myself.

I just had hoped that we’d make it respectable but obviously, they exceeded my expectations.

As the game meandered toward the end, I kept thinking to myself that they actually could pull this one out, especially with as hard as the defense was playing.

They gave up a paltry six points, who knew?

But anyway, the Texans had a game to play today and they faced the then 5-4 New York Jets.

The Jets had the league’s 4th-best defense and 11th-ranked offense,  so they’re certainly better than their record indicates.

The offense seemed to run smoothly right out of the gate with T.J. Yates comfortably making the right throws to keep things moving.

The rapport with the receivers wasn’t quite there but it certainly will get better with time.

It seemed to get better when Yates threw a 61-yard pass to DeAndre Hopkins up the middle for a touchdown allowing the Texans to go up 10-3.

Darrelle Revis was on the coverage and it was Nuk’s elusiveness that caused Revis to fall flat on his face as he coasted to the end zone.

Revis Island?

I think not — on that play alone, Hopkins commandeered that territory, re-staked the claim and dedicated it as “Nuk” territory.

J.J. Watt got going early with a tackle-for-loss on Stevan Ridley for two yards and finished the half with three tackles-for-loss, one QB rush and a sack on Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The 2nd half involved even more intensity — as the Texans defense did not relent and offense continued to click with ease with an immense amount of trick plays used.

Speaking of that, we saw Cecil Shorts throw only his 2nd touchdown pass of his career which was a 21-yarder to Alfred Blue to put the Texans back on top 17-10 in the third quarter.

Yates’ work wasn’t done as he found an open-enough Hopkins in the right corner to catch a 20-yard pass for his 2nd on the day and his 10th of the season to put the Texans up 24-10.

What about our defense as a whole?

Watt took the lead as everybody did some of the little things to make plays in order to help this football team win.

If it wasn’t Charles James II breaking up passes, or rookie corner Kevin Johnson wreaking havoc like a vet or Eddie Pleasant and Andre Hal grabbing Fitzpatrick’s failed passes as if they were fallen fruit from trees, this team did anything and everything to get what they wanted.

What’s that?

A 24-17 win!

I can obviously tell that these guys want it now and it’s so bad that they can taste it.

Frankly, the AFC South is up for grabs and it’s up to the Texans to go out and seize to take what’s theirs.

Yates had an efficient, incredible game as if he never left the Texans by passing 16-for-34 for 229 yards and two touchdown passes.

These guys need to continue to take it one game at a time but it’s clearly obvious that this team has got its groove back.

For how long, I don’t know but it has been damn fun to watch so far.

By the way, the Texans defense has only allowed TWO touchdowns in the past 14 quarters.  Outstanding!

Go Texans.
