Houston Texans: Receiving Corps Earn High Marks

facebooktwitterreddit

Now it’s time for the second half of the season Houston Texans fans.

Luckily, their bye week was scheduled right at the midpoint of the season to give this team time recharge, refocus and transmogrify themselves into a team that will finish the season respectably.

It won’t be all that hard to do — with the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck to miss some time — likely six weeks — with injury, this is the perfect time for the Texans to pounce on every opportunity to make headway in the division.

Because, quite honestly, as long as our division record is sound, we may be able to sneak in which all-in-all would culminate the season as a abbreviated, not as pronounced success.

But it’s up to the Texans to get the job done as the Tennessee Titans appear to have a new fire lit up under the rears with the firing of Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Mularkey taking over the reins as head coach.

Marcus Mariota is one of the league’s up-and-coming talents and he may have the ability to will his team to start winning football games as they’re breathing down our necks 2-6 record.

But enough about the doom and gloom, let’s talk about something positive about the Texans for a change.

Sometimes that’s a little harder to find but there are things to talk about.

Let’s talk about our receiving corps which has been quite good when all are playing together and healthy.

Other experts out there are taking notice as well.

Who are they?

Pro Football Focus is definitely one of those experts.

PFF has ranked the Texans having 6th-best receiving corps in the NFL at this point in the season.

This is largely because of DeAndre Hopkins incredible effort this season but Nate Washington and Cecil Shorts have contributed admirably to the Texans air attack.

They gave the Texans an average grade of 77.1 with Hopkins receiving the highest grade of the three at 92.2.  Washington and Shorts received grades of 72.1 and 66.9, respectively.

This certainly awesome news considering the fact that the Texans have played a game of musical chairs at quarterback, making these guys wonder just who is going to throw to them week-by-week.

  • Ryan Mallett is now a cast-off — he still hasn’t been picked up by any other team — and Brian Hoyer has taken over the duties under center and is working hard to the best of his ability.

The fact that these guys are able to accomplish such a feat is nothing short of amazing but goes to show how talented this group of gentlemen are.

I’ve continued to say that we’ve assembled one of the greatest wide receiving units in years and I firmly believe the notion that I made.

They continue to be one of few bright spots this team has had this season.

Who was ranked ahead of the Texans?

The Miami Dolphins (77.3), New York Jets (77.9), Cincinnati Bengals (78.7), Jacksonville Jaguars (84.0) and the Arizona Cardinals (84.9).

It really feels good to be in the top 10 in something for a change.

    Flabbergasting.

Hopkins has caught 66 balls for 870 yards on the season with six touchdowns, already tying his total from 2014.  His 112 targets are good for second in the league behind the Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones.

Washington has 26 receptions for 411 yards for a productive 15.8 yards per catch and three touchdowns.

And Shorts has 26 receptions for 299 yards and one touchdown.

Keep up the good work guys.
