Houston Astros MiLB Players Of The Month: May

Another month in the books and another month of fantastic performances up and down the Houston Astros minor league system. All over the system guys are making their names heard. Check out the best months of May:

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies

HITTERJon Singleton, 1B

  • May Stats: 29 G, .286 BA/.367 OBP/.634 SLG, 22 R, 7 2B, 10 HR, 37 RBI, 15 BB/21 SO

Singleton got off to a bit of slow start in 2015 but really turned it on this month. In April he struck out 20 times in 19 games. This month he only struck out 21 tims in 29 games. The 37 RBIs were top in the Astros system in the month of May. Singleton is really making a push to be back up with the big league club.

PITCHER: Dan Straily, RHP

  • May Stats: 2-2, 3.07 ERA, 29.1 IP, 35 H, 13 R, 10 ER, 3 BB, 28 SO

As was the case with Singleton, Straily also got off to a slow start. He has turned it around this month and could be the next starter to be called up.  Most encouraging is the 0.9 BB/9 and 8.6 SO/9 in the month of May.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks

HITTERTony Kemp, 2B

  • May Stats: 23 G, .326 BA/.417 OBP/.402 SLG, 15 R, 5 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 14 BB/10 SO, 11 SB

All Kemp has done since coming into the Astros system is hit and he continued it this month. The way he is swinging he would be a prototypical leadoff guy with good speed and ability to draw a walk. Most notably this month he stole 11 bases compared to only two in April.

PITCHERChris Devenski, RHP

  • May Stats: 4-0, 1.01 ERA, 26.2 IP, 20 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 BB, 19 SO

Devenski had a phenomenal month of April but was a bit overshadowed by McCullers. This month he continued his torrid pace sending down hitters. On the season he is 6-0 with a 0.59 ERA. Also want to note Vincent Velasquez had a 1.40 ERA with 28 K in 19.1 IP this month.

    HITTER: AJ Reed, 1B

    • May Stats: 28 G, .327 BA/.417 OBP/.664 SLG, 23 R, 8 2B, 10 HR, 29 RBI, 17 BB/27 SO

Reed really showed off his power this month crushing the 10 homers in 28 games. It was also nice to see him lower the strikeout ratio this month. It is only a matter of time before he will be moving up to Corpus.

    PITCHER: Joe Musgrove, RHP

    • May Stats: 3-0, 3.00 ERA, 24 IP, 27 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 0 BB, 36 SO

Yes you read that right. Musgrove had 0 BB/36 K in the month of May. On the season he now has a 1 BB/59 K between Low A and High A.

    A: Quad Cities River Bandits

    HITTER: Jacob Nottingham, C

    • May Stats: 23 G, .355 BA/.406 OBP/.591 SLG, 13 R, 8 2B, 4 HR, 20 RBI, 7 BB/20 SO

The Astros 6th round pick from 2013 really had a break out month. While the potential has been there, he has definitely been the breakout prospect so far this season. It is also nice to see him being a run producer driving in 20 guys in 23 games.

    PITCHER: Akeem Bostick, RHP

    • May Stats: 1-1, 1.29 ERA, 21 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 14 SO

Bostick got his full season started a little late but has come out dominating since. He is holding opponents to an impressive .125 BAA and limiting the walks with only one free pass allowed in 21 innings this month.
