With the 40th pick in Round 6 (216th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select…

Christian Covington — the first Canadian to be drafted into the NFL!

Up until recent seasons, the Texans haven’t focused on beefing up their defensive prowess.  One can look no further than the Seattle Seahawks as far as their success over the past few seasons and their Super Bowl win the season before last.

Now is the time more than ever to ensure that the Texans can’t miss in these later rounds because a lot of these guys found will likely have a solid role on our roster.

You don’t have to take my word for it, ESPN’s Trey Wingo mentioned that the 33 percent of an NFL team’s final roster are filled with picks in Rounds 4 through 7.

That’s an interesting stat so the Texans will need to do everything they can to make it count and ensure that our fan base is proud of their work.

After all, it’s the fans that our the fuel to the NFL’s massive engine right?

I’m thrilled that the Texans were able to find such a find in this round and Covington could certainly could be a diamond-in-the rough.

He doesn’t have to go too far as Rice University was his alma mater.

With a 6’2″, 289-pound from with a 33 1/4″ arm length and 10″ hands, Covington will complement an already beastly Front 7 quite well.

  • He’s a fierce as they come with lots of power and fights off blockers left-and-right tearing up pockets as he sees them.

He does have some coordination issues that does affect his ability to defend but I’m sure Romeo Crennel and the rest of his staff will coach him up to prevent that from happening.

He had a knee cap dislocation two games into last year’s season causing him to miss a big chunk of time so it remains to be seen how much of force he will be reckoned with.

But I think he was worth the pick up although many NFL scouts wanted him stay another year to improve his value.

ESPN 97.5 FM Houston’s Jayson Braddock on the pick, indicating that Crennel fought hard to get this pick:

The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain’s prognosis:

    More from Houston Texans

Covington had 122 combined tackles, 23.0 tackles-for-loss, 11.5 sacks, five passes defended and two forced fumbles in parts of three seasons at Rice.

Covington is seems to be one of those guys that took the road less traveled and is itching at a chance to succeed.

He will have his chance so we’ll see — go Texans!
