Houston Texans: Make A Play For Philip Rivers?

It’s quite rare to see a top-tier quarterback become available in free agency.

But with news that’s coming out on the West coast, there seems to be a possibility of this happening.

Just who am I talking about?

The one and only Philip Rivers — the San Diego Chargers quarterback.

Rivers has been hesitant to sign a new extension and has made it clear that he wants to honor the remainder of his contract that ends after the upcoming season.

To which after that point, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

The Chargers have been rumored for quite some time to be moving to Los Angeles with a stadium deal in the works and Rivers may not be a fan of uprooting his burgeoning family of seven children to the sprawling metropolis.

If he leaves, he may be more inclined to moving back closer to the calmer surroundings of his roots in the South.

Rivers is a native of Decatur, Ga.

But general manager Tom Telesco has been been dead set since the end of this past season on signing him to a new extension despite the feelings Rivers’ has.

"“I don’t like Philip as our QB, I love him,” Telesco told Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego via text. “And I’ll go to war with him.”"

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Rivers will be the Chargers quarterback for the foreseeable future:

So although Rivers was quite honest about how he feels, if the Chargers really want him, they can tag him franchise-style and all the talks about him leaving will be squashed at least for one more season.

But it’s a matter of if the Chargers think he’s worth it.

Acee, who covers the Chargers’ beat, gave his own two cents:

Another intriguing development is that the Chargers are rumored to try to make a run to move up in the draft order for Marcus Mariota, a top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft, Rivers may be on the block.

The Chargers have the 17th pick this year, coincidentally right after the Texans.

With all of the flattering words that Telesco had to say about Rivers, he did not deny the possibility of a trade for the gunslinger.

So this begs an important question, although it seems we’ve settled our quarterback situation for now by signing Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer — with a myriad of unknowns with those guys — would the Texans give up some coveted assets to snag Rivers?

Just because of the difficulty of making the numbers work, this scenario would be highly unlikely until 2016 but you never know what wheels could be turning at the Texans’ front office.

I think he’s absolutely worth going after but he’s likely going to cost quite a bit to the tune of multiple assets such as first-round picks.

Fortunately, we’re not in the early stages of a rebuild and we honestly just need a dominant quarterback to catapult this team in the right direction.

He’d fit in nicely with this team.

Rivers, 33, passed for 4,286 yards with 31 touchdowns to 18 interceptions in 2014.

In 11 seasons, all with the Chargers, he holds franchise records in passer rating (95.7), consecutive starts (144) and wins as a starter (88). He is 2nd in passing yards (36,655) and passing touchdowns (252) to Dan Fouts.

Although this is a huge “what-if” scenario, it doesn’t hurt to wonder if he is that type of player to trade for, a player that is definitely still in his prime.

We’ll have to see if they do.

Go Texans!
