Don’t you just love headlines?!?

I mean, yes, Tom Savage did actually lead the Houston Texans to a game winning drive over the Houston Texans, but that’s not the biggest story when it comes to a week three preseason win.

Savage, however, was impressive. Going 5-for-6 for 68 yards, including a beautiful 31-yard TD pass to Ryan Griffin to put the Texans with an extra point. The Texans would go for two, and Savage found Travis Labhart for two and the game, giving the Texans a 18-17 win, and a 2-1 preseason record.

But what happened with the starters is what y’all really want to know about. Ryan Fitzpatrick was as mediocre as it gets. He finished completing 10 of 17 passes for 80 yards, mostly short throws for the night, including the patented 3rd down throw short of the sticks.

Case Keenum relieved Fitzpatrick at halftime and didn’t fare much better at all. Keenum’s first drive saw some good and some bad, but missed on several big throws and several passes were near interceptions. He finished 11-18 for 74 yards.

The Texans defense looked much improved against the Broncos first team. They held the Broncos to just 3 points through the first 28 minutes of the first half…Then Peyton Manning happened, finding Emmanuel Sanders for two long touchdowns.

Both touchdowns were great throws to Sanders, who beat A.J. Bouye and Eddie Pleasant. Bouye did pick off a Manning pass earlier in the half.

Brian Cushing saw his first action of the preseason. Brandon Brooks also played into the third quarter, which should put him on track for a potential week one start. Andre Johnson was active and had 3 catches for 18 yards. Jadeveon Clowney, Arian Foster, Chris Myers, and Johnathan Joseph were all inactive.

We will have more thoughts on the Texans win later this week!

The Texans face off against the San Francisco 49’ers in their final preseason game this Thursday night.
