Houston Astros Promote Several Top Prospects

Only a week ago the Houston Astros promoted one of their top prospects, Mark Appel, to Corpus Christi.

On Monday the Astros made some more moves throughout the system promoting some of the top prospects such as Josh Hader and Teoscar Hernandez.

The move to promote Josh Hader and Teoscar Hernandez really adds some excitement to Corpus Christi’s roster. They now feature Mark Appel, Josh Hader, and Kyle Smith in their rotation.

Teoscar Hernandez will add more speed to a lineup which already has Tony Kemp and Delino DeShields. Hernandez destroyed Cal League pitching, and will get a much tougher test in the Texas League.

The Astros also announced the promotion of Brett Phillips.

Brett Phillips has really put together a good season. He is hitting for power and stealing bases while playing good defense in the outfield. He’s definitely a prospect to keep your eye out on, and I am really excited to see what he does in Lancaster.

Ruben Sosa, Andrew Aplin, and Luis Cruz were also all promoted to AAA affiliate Oklahoma City Redhawks. Cruz was added to the 40-man roster last offseason to avoid being plucked away in last year’s Rule 5 Draft.

The 23-year old lefty, Cruz dominated the Texas League, finishing with a 3.14 ERA in 100.1 innings, including striking out 92 batters. He will be on a long list of candidates for the 2015 starting rotation.

We expected several promotions once the trade deadline passed, and it appears we have seen most of them. There will likely be a few more as the season goes on, but this was the big “promotion day” we had all been waiting for!
