James Harden is currently in the Philippines participating in the charity event. He was talking with Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star) about their national team, when he was asked a separate question about the Houston Rockets.
“Dwight (Howard) and I are the cornerstones of the Rockets,” said Harden. “The rest of the guys are role players or pieces that complete our team. We’ve lost some pieces and added some pieces. I think we’ll be fine next season.”
Of course the media picked up on this quote right away and ran with it.
Now, should Harden have said this? Probably not.
However, Harden is most certainly telling the truth. Heck, GM Daryl Morey agrees. Just look at the way he handled this offseason. Swung for the fences to add one more cornerstone, knowing it would cost him other “role players or pieces”. It didn’t work out.
Remember what was on the George R. Brown Convention Center this past season? A sign with two players on it; No it wasn’t Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik. Not it wasn’t Chandler Parsons and Terrence Jones. It was Dwight Howard and James Harden. The two cornerstones of the Rockets.
This is just another case of a player giving his honest opinion and then getting killed for it.
