The Houston Rockets have traded center Omer Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans for a future first round pick. This is the first step in the Rocket’s quest to free up salary cap space so that they can pursue the likes of free agents, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James.
Omer Asik has been mentioned in trade rumors since the day Dwight Howard decided to come to Houston. The Turkish center was very unhappy with the signing of Howard as he thought he deserved to be the starting big man. The Rockets tried to trade Asik numerous times throughout the season but could never find the right deal. It looks like they have now found the perfect one as they are able to unload a large contract as well as an unhappy player and receive a potential lottery pick in the process.
The Pelicans will pair Asik with All-Star forward, Anthony Davis, in the front court. This upgrade will add size and depth, helping the Pelicans become a contender for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference.
Omer Asik is an elite rebounder and rim protector, thus helping the Pelicans defensively. The Houston Rockets will also send New Orleans $1.5 million in cash to help offset Asik’s large contract.

The Houston Rockets will now look to move Jeremy Lin to free up even more salary cap space. The Rockets will now move fast as there is no better time to do trades than the NBA Draft as teams will look to improve. Free agency starts next week and the Rockets will need to unload Lin if they hope to give Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James a substantial offer.

For those who were questioning whether or not the Rockets would be able to pursue Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James, your doubts have been put to bed. Daryl Morey has shown his willingness to be aggressive this summer and put together a “Big 3″, in Houston. Look for the Rockets to make some moves tomorrow night in the NBA Draft as they do own two picks in this years draft.
Source confirms the Rockets will receive the first round pick from Pelicans next year if it is between 4-19. That’s huge.
