The Houston Texans have named Ryan Fitzpatrick their starting quarterback for week one.
Bill O’Brien told the Houston media this afternoon the news, after making the announcement to his team earlier this morning.
O’Brien told the media Fitzpatrick earned the job during workouts earlier this offseason.
“He earned it. He earned it with his preparation. He earned it with his accuracy.” O’Brien says of Fitzpatrick. #Texans

As far as the other three quarterbacks, O’Brien says they have all worked hard and will battle for the backup job. Case Keenum, T.J. Yates, and Tom Savage will fight for the #2 and #3 quarterbacks role, and O’Brien is looking for more consistency from the three.
Why the announcement now? O’Brien says he wanted the team to know who their starting quarterback was coming into mandatory workouts today, saying it was important for the team to know who will be under center week one, before they take a month long break in the summer.
In other non-surprising news, Andre Johnson sat out today’s first day of mandatory workouts. O’Brien has been in touch with the All-Pro receiver, and isn’t concerned with him catching up if/when he returns.
Fitzpatrick spoke to the Texans media and had this to say:
Ryan Fitzpatrick, on being named starter today: We still have a long way to go before we step on the field and play Washington. #Texans
