Following a 2-14 season there were clearly more needs than could be filled in one draft. The Houston Texans signed a few free agents to plug some of the holes. One of the positions with the most change is at safety.

2013 2nd round draft pick D.J. Swearinger is expected to be the starter at strong safety. Holdovers Shilo Keo and Eddie Pleasant remain in the mix but neither has been able to distinguish themselves beyond special teams in past two-three seasons.

Lonnie Ballentine, “Mr. Irrelevant” is an athletic freak, but very raw and likely to only help on special teams this year, if he makes the 53 man roster. Two new Texans will be competing for the starting free safety job.
