LSU head coach Les Miles was in Houston yesterday for a Houston Touchdown Club luncheon and he had some good things to say about Alfred Blue.
Blue was selected by the Texans with the 181st pick (6th round) in the 2014 NFL Draft. Miles says the Texans got an absolute steal in Blue who will “will play special teams snaps, start to finish” and expects Texans fans to love him.
“Alfred Blue will be a great addition to the team. One, he’s a very bright player. A very talented guy. Two years ago when we started the season, he may well have been the finest back in our conference.”
As a freshman with the Tigers, Blue managed 101 rushing yards on just 20 attempts. He saw a big jump in playing time as a sophomore, rushing the ball 78 times for 539 yards (6.9 ypc) and 7 scores. Blue started the 2012 season with back-to-back 100-yard performances before suffering a season-ending injury in week 3. Last season, Blue averaged 4.8 yards per carry on 71 attempts with one touchdown.
Miles told the Houston media that Blue’s nickname “cheese” because of his constant smiling. That’s a nickname that could be shared with Jadeveon Clowney as well.Though Blue’s play may have taken a step back in 2013, Miles isn’t concerned with the numbers. “He took some time to rebound off the injury, but his speed is very good. His ball skills are great. He will run aggressively,” Miles said.
Blue is expected to be the Texans second or third running back, but definitely has competition for his spot behind Arian Foster. Andre Brown and Dennis Johnson will also look to make their mark in the backfield.
The 6th-rounder will have to make a big impression on special teams to earn his spot on the team.
