After taking Jadeveon Clowney in the first round, the Texans have selected OG Xavier Su’a Filo from UCLA in round two.
Todd McShay (talking on ESPN) says he loves his versatility. He’s a nasty, physical guard that is considered a tone-setter according to McShay. The Texans had a big need at the guard position and just filled it with Su’a Filo.
Here’s the NFL.com scouting report on Texans new offensive lineman:
Strengths: Quick out of his stance. Effective pass blocker — can bend his knees, extend and mirror in short area. Generates movement in the run game. Can work his hips and maneuver to gain positioning. Good foot athlete. Can pull, trap, combo block and step to the second level. Durable three-year starter. Has played guard and tackle.
If I had to guess, Su’a-Filo will be in the starting lineup week one. The Texans had a big hole in their starting lineup with Wade Smith now a free agent.
Speaking to the Texans media after being selected, Su’a-Filo says he patterns his game after Logan Mankins. That’s something former Patriots coach now Texans head coach, Bill O’Brien, probably loved to hear when they met before the draft.
The Texans will now look at QB, DL, OT over their next few picks to continue building up their depth. The Texans next pick will be the first pick in the third round, pending any other trades. It’s possible the Texans will move up or move down from the third round, so the night is far from over.
