NFL Network’s Mike Mayock only does one mock draft a year, and it comes out the night before the first round of the NFL Draft. His first pick has finally been revealed and it’s no surprise who he has the Texans selecting.
1. Houston: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
Comment: No surprise with this pick, especially after the owner this week called Clowney “obviously the best player in the draft.” Interestingly, Mayock has pass-rushing LB Khalil Mack rated higher in his Top 100 Prospects list, but gives Clowney to the Texans (or a team Houston is drafting for in a trade-down scenario).
Mayock doesn’t have a quarterback being taken in the first round until the Tenneseee Titans are on the clock at #11. He has Blake Bortles playing in the Music City and against the Texans twice a year. Mayock also has Johnny Manziel falling to the Dallas Cowboys at #16, which would sure please and anger Texans fans at the same time. I’m sure this is a scenario that Bill O’Brien and the Texans would prefer not to see come true.
In other potentially Texans-related picks, Mayock has Teddy Bridgewater falling to the Cleveland Browns at #26.
Rounding out Mayock’s top-five were Greg Robinson, Khalil Mack, Jake Matthews, and Sammy Watkins.
We’re almost there Texans fans! Just hang in there for one more day!
